A maternity photoshoot is a beautiful way to celebrate the upcoming arrival of a new baby and capture the love and anticipation within your family. Including older siblings in the session adds an extra layer of sweetness and significance. However, preparing them for the experience can make all the difference in ensuring the session goes smoothly and everyone enjoys their time. Here’s how to help your older children get ready for the big day.

1. Talk to Them About the Photoshoot
Start by explaining what a maternity photoshoot is and why it’s important. Use language that makes them feel included and excited, such as, “This is our chance to take special pictures of our family before the baby comes.” Let them know that their role is important and that they’ll help make the photos extra special.
If they’re old enough, you can even show them examples of other family maternity photos to give them an idea of what to expect.
2. Involve Them in the Planning
Make older siblings feel part of the process by involving them in small decisions. For example:
Let them help pick their outfit (with some guidance on coordination, of course!).
Ask if there’s a pose or activity they’d like to include, such as hugging Mom’s baby bump or holding a special prop.
Give them a small role, like holding an ultrasound photo or wearing a “big brother” or “big sister” shirt.
When they feel included, they’re more likely to be cooperative and excited during the session.
3. Keep Them Comfortable
Comfort is key to ensuring older siblings are happy and relaxed during the session:
Dress Comfortably: Choose outfits that allow them to move freely and aren’t itchy or restrictive. Consider layering options if the session is outdoors.
Bring Snacks: Pack easy, mess-free snacks and water to keep their energy up. Hungry kids are rarely happy kids!
Provide Breaks: Be mindful of their attention span. Allow time for short breaks to relax or play if the session is lengthy.

4. Bring Props or Toys
Having familiar items on hand can make children feel at ease. Bring along a favorite stuffed animal, toy, or blanket to keep them calm. Some of these items can even be incorporated into the photos, adding a sentimental touch.
5. Turn it into a Fun Experience
Create a sense of play and adventure around the photoshoot. Encourage them to have fun and show their personality. If they’re shy in front of the camera, let them cuddle close to Mom or Dad, or play near the baby bump. A relaxed, natural vibe makes for the best family photos.
Photographers experienced with children often use games, songs, or jokes to keep little ones engaged. Let them know it’s okay to giggle, move, or be themselves—it’s all part of capturing authentic moments.
6. Set Realistic Expectations
Every child is different, and it’s important to remember that not every pose or moment will go as planned. Let your photographer know about your child’s personality, and set realistic expectations for their involvement. It’s okay if they’re wiggly, silly, or even a little grumpy—those moments often make for the most heartfelt and memorable photos!

7. Celebrate Their Role in the Growing Family
Finally, remind older siblings of how special they are. Talk about the importance of their new role as a big brother or sister and how much their love for the new baby matters. This can help them feel proud and excited to participate in the session.
Including older siblings in your maternity photoshoot is a wonderful way to capture the bond between family members as you prepare to welcome your new baby. With a little preparation, you can make the experience enjoyable for everyone, and the result will be beautiful, authentic photos that celebrate this exciting chapter in your lives.
